In 2013, Mohamed stepped down as vice president of Egypt, a role he fulfilled on an interim basis. He is the founder of the Egyptian Constitutional Party, holding office as party leader from 2012 to 2013, where he aspired to instil and preserve Egypt’s 2011 revolutionary ideas and ambitions according to liberal ideals.

From 1997 to 2009, Mohamed completed three terms as Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a non-governmental organisation based in Vienna that supports the ethical use of nuclear energy while opposing its use for military purposes, including atomic weaponry. Before being appointed Director of the IAEA, Mohamed fulfilled several roles in the organisation, including Assistant Director General for External Relations, Legal Adviser and senior staff member of the Secretariat.

He has also co-authored and edited several scholarly articles, including, The International Law of Nuclear Energy and Atoms for Peace.

In 2005, Mohamed and IAEA were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to keep nuclear energy being utilised for peaceful objectives. He holds numerous national honours, including Decoration for Services to the Republic of Austria, Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, National Order of Merit from Algeria, Order of the Nile from the Egyptian Government and the Golden Dove of Peace from the President of Italy.
