Douglas Rattray's Biography

Douglas Rattray is an internationally recognised battlefield storyteller, leadership speaker and conservationist who lives and works on the historic battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

As Manager of the 2,500-hectare Fugitives’ Drift Game Reserve, Douglas combines wildlife conservation, heritage preservation and tourism with a lifelong passion for sharing one of history’s most remarkable stories. His work encompasses conservation management, anti-poaching operations, habitat restoration and the protection of internationally significant historical and archaeological sites.

Douglas also serves as a Board Member of KHULA Education (The David Rattray Foundation), helping guide an organisation that supports more than 6,500 children and young people and hundreds of teachers throughout rural KwaZulu-Natal. The Foundation continues the educational vision established by his late father, creating opportunities that transform lives through education.

The son of the late David Rattray, Douglas proudly continues one of the world’s most respected traditions of battlefield storytelling. While honouring that remarkable legacy, he has developed his own distinctive style—immersive, meticulously researched and deeply human—bringing audiences onto the battlefield rather than simply describing it.

Rather than focusing solely on military history, Douglas explores the timeless human themes behind history’s defining moments: leadership, communication, courage, organisational culture, resilience, innovation and decision-making under extraordinary pressure.
