Charles Li's Biography

Charles Li is Founder and Chairman of Micro Connect, a financial market platform that provides market infrastructure, fintech, and platform development.

Previously, Charles was Chief Executive of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (“HKEX”) from 2010 to 2020.  During this time, he steered the organization through a series of transformative initiatives that have solidified its position as a global financial powerhouse. As a highly sought-after speaker, he passionately shares insights on a range of topics, including the evolution of financial markets, the global economic landscape, and the future of Hong Kong as an international financial hub.

Under his leadership, HKEX witnessed remarkable milestones, with strategic moves that have reshaped the financial landscape. Notable achievements include the landmark acquisition of the London Metal Exchange in 2012, the pioneering launch of OTC Clear in 2013, and the groundbreaking introductions of Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect in 2014, Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect in 2016, and Bond Connect in 2017. These initiatives have reinforced Hong Kong’s pivotal role as a hub for Renminbi trading and facilitated global investment access to Chinese markets. Furthermore, Mr. Li’s commitment to enhancing Hong Kong’s competitiveness and establishing it as a premier IPO center has been instrumental in ensuring the city’s enduring prominence in the global financial sphere.

Born in Beijing and raised in Gansu, Charles Li’s journey to leadership is marked by diverse experiences. Before pursuing further studies abroad, he worked as an offshore oil worker in the North China Sea and later served as an editor-reporter for China Daily. Following the completion of his Juris Doctor (JD) degree in the United States, he embarked on a successful legal career in New York, serving with distinction at esteemed law firms such as Davis Polk & Wardwell and Brown & Wood. Prior to his tenure at HKEX, Mr. Li held pivotal roles, including Chairman of JP Morgan China and President of Merrill Lynch China, where his expertise significantly contributed to the firms’ success in the Chinese market.

Charles Li’s educational journey reflects his commitment to excellence. He earned a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in English literature from Xiamen University in 1984, followed by a Master of Arts (MA) degree in journalism from the University of Alabama in 1988. His pursuit of knowledge culminated in a Juris Doctor (JD) degree from Columbia University School of Law in 1991, equipping him with a deep understanding of the legal complexities inherent in the financial world.
