Chad P. Bown's Biography
Chad P. Bown is the Reginald Jones Senior Fellow at the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), where he specialises in international trade, industrial policy, economic security and global supply chains. He previously served as Chief Economist at the U.S. Department of State (2024-2025) and as Senior Economist for International Trade and Investment on the White House Council of Economic Advisers during the Obama administration.
Before joining PIIE, Chad spent seven years as a Lead Economist at the World Bank, advising developing countries on international trade policy, and was a visiting scholar at the WTO Secretariat in Geneva. He also served for twelve years as a tenured Professor of Economics at Brandeis University, where he received multiple teaching awards.
His research focuses on the political economy of international trade policy, trade agreements, industrial policy, economic security and supply chains. He is the author of Self-Enforcing Trade: Developing Countries and WTO Dispute Settlement and has co-authored and edited several influential volumes on global trade and economic policy.
Chad is also a widely published commentator, with articles appearing in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Foreign Affairs, Foreign Policy and Harvard Business Review. He co-created and co-hosted the acclaimed Trade Talks podcast, producing more than 200 episodes exploring international trade and economic policy.
He is a Research Fellow at CEPR, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and has served on the editorial boards of numerous leading academic journals. Chad holds a B.A. in Economics and International Relations from Bucknell University and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
