Martina Hingis's Biography
Martina Hingis is one of the greatest tennis players of all time and one of the sport’s most accomplished champions. A former World No. 1, she remains the youngest player ever to reach the top ranking, achieving the feat at just 16 years of age following a remarkable breakthrough season in 1997.
Nicknamed the “Swiss Miss”, Hingis became the youngest Grand Slam singles champion of the 20th century when she won the 1997 Australian Open. That same year, she captured three Grand Slam singles titles, won 12 tournaments and finished the season as the world’s dominant player. She went on to claim five Grand Slam singles titles, 13 Grand Slam women’s doubles titles and seven Grand Slam mixed doubles titles, amassing 25 major championships across all disciplines.
Throughout her career, Hingis was renowned for her exceptional court intelligence, anticipation and tactical brilliance. She won 43 WTA singles titles, including two WTA Finals championships, and reached 12 Grand Slam singles finals between 1997 and 2002. Despite fierce competition from an era featuring Steffi Graf, Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati and Venus Williams, Hingis established herself as one of tennis’ defining players.
After initially retiring in 2003 due to injury, Hingis made a successful comeback in 2006, returning to the world’s Top 10 and adding further singles and doubles titles to her record before retiring from singles competition in 2007. She later enjoyed an outstanding doubles career, winning multiple Grand Slam women’s and mixed doubles titles before retiring from professional tennis in 2017.
In recognition of her extraordinary achievements, Hingis was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 2013.
