James Martin's Biography

James Martin is a digital responsibility expert, and one of the world’s leading voices on the impacts and risks of AI in particular. He conceived and presents “Frugal AI” and “Responsible AI” – the first ever AI-focused training courses from French digital sustainability pioneers GreenIT.fr – and advises companies and associations worldwide on how to use technology more responsibly. He is also a founding member of Ecologits, a global standard for evaluating AI’s environmental impacts. He created responsible tech blog BetterTech in 2018.

Skilled at decoding complex technological concepts for all types of audiences, James speaks regularly at events such as ChangeNOW, one of Europe’s biggest climate conferences, where he was one of the first to outline the considerable environmental impacts of generative AI, in March 2025 (extracts; full session). He was also a pioneering speaker on the same topic at VivaTech, one of the world’s largest tech events, in 2024 and 2025, and has spoken three times at leading sustainable tech event Green IO. He was also invited to speak about responsible AI at the 10th “Forum Data & IA” (Jan 2026) of France’s Groupe La Poste, with the company’s head of CSR, and has advised the UK’s Association for Science Discovery Centres on how to communicate responsibility about AI and its impacts.

Previously, James led communications and sustainability at French tech scale-ups Scaleway (iliad Group) and Shippeo (part of French Tech 120, 2025). He was pivotal in enabling Scaleway to be recognised as a digital sustainability pioneer – notably via a much-referenced Green IT white paper, “How can engineers make tech more sustainable?” – 2023 – whilst it established one of Europe’s most powerful AI GPU clusters; and in conceiving Shippeo’s first ever Responsible AI Charter. Prior to that, James was a technology and music journalist, and also led editorial content and social media at RX France, part of the world’s largest events company.
