Hans-Werner Sinn's Biography

Professor Dr. Hans-Werner Sinn has been Professor of Economics and Public Finance at the LMU München since 1984. He is the best-known and most trenchant German critic of the way in which the eurozone has managed – or, in his view, mismanaged – the crisis. In 2011 he was the first to detect and interpret the Target balances of the Eurosystem.

He is President of the CESifo Group (CES, CESifo GmbH and Ifo Institute) (1999-present), and was President of the German Economic Association (1997- 2000) as well as President of the International Institute of Public Finance (2006-2009), the world association of public finance economists. He is also senior editor of the journal Economic Policy.

Professor Sinn has written a number of important books. They include: “The New Systems Competition” (Wiley-Blackwell, 2003), “Can Germany Be Saved?: The Malaise of the World’s First Welfare
State” (MIT Press, 2007), and “The Green Paradox” (MIT Press, 2012).

In “Casino Capitalism” (Oxford University Press, 2010), Professor Sinn examines the causes of the banking crisis and presents a road-map for the reform of financial markets across the world. His latest book, “The Euro Trap: On Bursting Bubbles, Budgets, and Beliefs” (Oxford University Press, 2014), identifies the roots of the financial crisis in the huge divergences in competitiveness that emerged in the years leading up to it. “The Euro Trap” was awarded one of the Financial Times’ Book of the Year.
