Fu Ying's Biography

Madam Fu Ying is a distinguished Chinese diplomat. Joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1977 she worked as an Attaché, Department of Translation and Interpretation for high ranking figures such as: Deng Xiaoping, Yang Shangkun, JiangZemin and Li Peng.

Fu Ying has since served as: Ambassador to the Philippines (1998-2000), Director-General of Asian Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2000-03), Ambassador to Australia (2003-06), Ambassador to the UK (2006-09) and Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs (2009-2013).

In March 2013 she was appointed the first female spokesman of the National Peoples Congress (NPC). She also chairs the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National People’s Congress.

Madam Fu has long been a pioneering figure, often the first to a role of her gender, ethnicity or age. Her tenacity and ability have earned her the title of China’s ‘Iron Lady’.
