Aja Raden's Biography

Aja Raden is a New York Times bestselling author, jewelry historian, and internationally recognized expert on luxury, diamonds, and deception. Trained as both a scientist and a jeweler, she studied history at the University of Chicago and design at the Art Institute of Chicago before beginning her career at the House of Kahn, where she authenticated rare jewels and antiquities, and later as Senior Designer for Tacori.

Her first book, Stoned: Jewelry, Obsession, and How Desire Shapes the World, became an international bestseller and led to invitations to speak at institutions including the Princeton Club, the Driehaus Museum, and the Smithsonian, which commissioned her introduction to its definitive volume GEM. Her second book, The Truth About Lies, was selected for Malcolm Gladwell’s Next Big Idea Club and established her as a leading voice on persuasion, perception, and the power of belief.

Today, Aja Raden is a sought-after speaker and consultant, frequently engaged by leading institutions and corporations to discuss jewelry, deception, and the future of luxury. She runs a private consulting practice advising high jewelry houses, gem companies, and creative firms on jewelry design, brand strategy, and market persuasion. She is widely recognized for her expertise in the rise of synthetic diamonds, the battle between the natural diamond lobby and lab-grown producers, and the shifting myths that define value in the industry.

Her commentary has made her both a trusted authority and, according to some, the person single-handedly responsible for the downfall of De Beers — a charge she accepts with characteristic humor. She has appeared as a featured expert in Showtime’s Nothing Lasts Forever, National Geographic’s Pathological, and the forthcoming Spiegel TV documentary, Diamond Rush.
