Dr Makaziwe Mandela's Biography
Dr Makaziwe Mandela is a distinguished businesswoman, academic, and global advocate for social justice, diversity, and inclusive leadership. The eldest daughter of President Nelson Mandela and Evelyn Mase, she has become a profound voice in the global conversation on equity and empowerment—shaping dialogue across continents with her insight, authenticity, and conviction.
Born in Johannesburg and raised in Soweto during apartheid, Dr Mandela’s life was shaped by the struggle for equality and human dignity. Her academic journey began at Fort Hare University, where she earned a BA in Social Work, followed by an Honours Degree in Sociology from the University of Natal. In 1984, she was awarded both the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship and the Fulbright Distinguished Fellowship Award to pursue a Master’s in Sociology and a PhD in Anthropology at the University of Massachusetts, USA.
Her career spans academia, corporate leadership, and philanthropy. Dr Mandela has held senior roles at the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Spoornet, and directorships at global organisations such as Nestlé SA. As a founding member of Nozala, a pioneering women’s investment group, she has empowered countless women through access to economic opportunity and leadership. She has also served on the boards of Rand Water Services, Myriad Medical, and Envirosev, as well as consulting widely in life skills and leadership development.
As Chairperson of House of Mandela—a business she co-founded with her daughter, Tukwini Mandela, in 2010—she celebrates African heritage and storytelling through enterprise. She also leads the House of Mandela Family Foundation, founded in 2017, which drives initiatives in education, healthcare, agriculture, renewable energy, and women’s empowerment across South Africa and beyond.
In October 2023, Dr Mandela published Mandela, a landmark work offering the most definitive and personal portrait of her father to date. Combining rare family photographs, unpublished letters, and Nelson Mandela’s own artwork, it presents a powerful testament to his humanity and legacy.
