Kwame Kwei-Armah's Biography

Kwame Kwei-Armah is an influential playwright, director, broadcaster and cultural leader whose work spans theatre, television and leadership in the arts. Awarded an OBE in 2011 and elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2014, he combines artistic excellence with commitment to inclusion and innovation.

From 2018 through Autumn 2024, Kwame served as Artistic Director of London’s Young Vic Theatre, overseeing a transformation that saw productions transfer to the West End and Broadway. Under his leadership the Young Vic launched the Best Seat in Your House digital streaming platform reaching audiences in over 85 countries, expanded diversity in its staffing (notably Black and Global Majority representation), and introduced leading programmes such as The Creators Program and Taking Part.

His body of creative work includes celebrated plays such as Elmina’s Kitchen, Fix Up, Statement of Regret and Let There Be Love. He has written musicals and adaptations including The Visitor and the book for Disney’s Hercules UK/West End version. He is also executive producer of acclaimed TV series, including Soon Gone (BAFTA & RTS nominated), and developing new scripted work under his House of Theresa banner.

In his keynotes, Kwame draws on this multi-faceted career to explore leadership, community change, resilience, and the transformative power of storytelling.
