Johan Norberg's Biography

Johan Norberg is a renowned Swedish author and broadcaster who champions open societies and free markets. With a flair for evidence-based storytelling, he translates complex economic trends into engaging narratives that resonate from boardrooms to classrooms.

His international bestseller In Defense of Global Capitalism (2003) has been translated into more than twenty-five languages, while Progress: Ten Reasons to Look Forward to the Future earned the 2017 Hayek Prize for its compelling case that humanity is advancing faster than we think. The follow-up, Open: The Story of Human Progress (2020), cements his reputation as one of today’s leading voices on globalization and innovation.

Norberg serves as Senior Fellow at the Cato Institute in Washington, DC and at the European Centre for International Political Economy in Brussels. He has fronted award-winning documentaries for PBS and Sweden’s SVT, bringing the human stories behind economic freedom to millions of viewers worldwide.

Drawing on more than two decades of global research, Norberg equips audiences with data, history, and optimism, illuminating how entrepreneurship, technology, and liberal institutions can tackle tomorrow’s challenges. Whether advising corporate leaders, policymakers, or students, he delivers actionable insights that cut through the noise and inspire forward-thinking decisions.
