Victoria Baines's Biography
Dr Victoria Baines is a leading authority on online trust, safety, and cybersecurity whose research and frontline experience span academia, big tech, and international law enforcement. As Professor of IT at London’s Gresham College, she delivers free public lectures that demystify digital risk and champion a human-centred cyberspace.
From 2013–2017, she directed Facebook’s Trust & Safety strategy for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, advising governments and intelligence agencies on countering cybercrime and harmful content. Earlier, at Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre, she designed the iOCTA—the EU’s flagship cyber-threat assessment—and led scenario planning that still informs EU policy.
Victoria chairs the Security Panel of the Worshipful Company of Information Technologists, the IT Livery Company in the City of London. She frequently contributes to major broadcast media outlets on digital ethics, cybercrime, and the misuse of emerging technologies, including Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence. Her acclaimed book Rhetoric of Insecurity (2021) explores 2,000 years of security storytelling and equips leaders to cut through fear-based narratives in the digital age.
A compelling keynote speaker, Victoria translates cutting-edge threat intelligence into practical insights for boardrooms and policy fora alike. Audiences value her clarity, wit, and foresight on the technologies—AI, quantum computing, extended reality—that will define the next decade of risk and opportunity.
