Rebecca Adlington OBE's Biography

Rebecca Adlington OBE stands among Britain’s most decorated swimmers, captivating the world at the 2008 Beijing Games with gold in both the 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle—Team GB’s first women’s Olympic swimming titles in 48 years. Her 800-metre victory shattered a world record that had stood since 1989, underscoring an athlete whose relentless drive redefined possibilities in the pool.

Transitioning from elite sport, Adlington channelled her competitive insight into a mission to make swimming accessible for every child. In 2013 she launched SwimStars, a nationwide learn-to-swim programme now operating in over 30 UK sites, and later expanded the initiative with Swim Mentor, empowering schools to raise aquatic standards. Her hands-on leadership has already helped more than 250,000 young people gain a life-saving skill.

A trusted voice of analysis for BBC Sport’s Olympic and World Championship coverage since 2013, Adlington brings clarity, enthusiasm and unparalleled first-hand expertise to global audiences. She is also a passionate advocate for women in sport and mental-health resilience, drawing on her own experiences to inspire fresh thinking on performance, balance and personal wellbeing.

Whether guiding executives on marginal-gains strategies or motivating students to persevere through setbacks, Adlington engages every audience with warmth, authenticity and stories of podium-level perseverance—demonstrating how discipline, teamwork and purpose translate far beyond the water.
