Maryam Moshiri's Biography

Maryam Moshiri is one of the BBC’s chief news anchors, trusted by more than 100 million viewers each week to make sense of fast-moving global events. Fluent in English and Italian and born in Tehran, she fronts the BBC News channel and the national bulletins on BBC One, bringing calm authority and sharp analysis to stories that shape the world.

After earning a postgraduate diploma in Broadcast Journalism at the London College of Communication, she began her career at Independent Radio News, joining the BBC in 2003 as a business reporter. Over the next sixteen years she became the face of the corporation’s business coverage, charting the economic fallout of 9/11, the global financial crisis and the pandemic, while interviewing decision-makers such as Jeff Bezos, Reed Hastings and Willie Walsh.

In February 2023 Moshiri was named one of five Chief Presenters selected to launch the BBC’s merged UK and international news channel. The following January she created and now anchors The World Today with Maryam Moshiri, the primetime digest watched on every continent. Her on-air ease has spawned viral moments—from a spontaneous seagull impression to an improvised “supermoon” and a countdown clip viewed more than three million times—and Metro has hailed her as “everyone’s favourite BBC News presenter.” Appearances on Channel 4’s Late Night Lycett and BBC Radio 4’s Ian Smith Is Stressed showcase her comedic range.

In 2025, Moshiri portrayed herself in the film Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, further cementing her status as a cultural touchstone. That same year, she led the BBC’s coverage of the death and funeral of Pope Francis and the subsequent papal conclave, delivering live reports from the Vatican.

Whether moderating a ministerial panel, chairing a C-suite summit or keynoting a leadership retreat, Moshiri equips audiences with clear, actionable perspectives on geopolitics, markets and media. Her blend of insight, warmth and quick-thinking presence makes her a sought-after host for conferences and awards ceremonies worldwide.
