José María Olazábal's Biography
José María Olazábal is a revered figure in international golf, celebrated for his exceptional skill, strategic acumen, and unwavering sportsmanship. A two-time Masters Champion, with victories in 1994 and 1999, he has captivated fans worldwide with his fearless play and composure under pressure. Olazábal’s leadership reached its pinnacle in 2012 when he captained the European Ryder Cup team to a historic comeback victory at Medinah, a feat often referred to as the “Miracle at Medinah.”
Born in Hondarribia, Spain, Olazábal’s passion for golf ignited at a young age. His father, Gaspar, worked as a greenskeeper, providing him with early exposure to the sport. He quickly rose through the amateur ranks, winning The Amateur Championship in 1984 before turning professional in 1985. In his rookie season, he finished second on the European Tour Order of Merit and was named the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year, becoming the first Spaniard to receive this honor.
Throughout his illustrious career, Olazábal has amassed over 30 professional victories worldwide, including 23 on the European Tour, ranking him ninth on the all-time list. His partnership with fellow Spaniard Seve Ballesteros is legendary; together, they became the most successful pairing in Ryder Cup history, securing 12 points from 15 matches. In recognition of his achievements, he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2009.
In 2019, Olazábal received the Confederation of Professional Golf’s Lifetime Achievement Award, honoring his outstanding contributions to the sport. Beyond his tournament successes, he has ventured into golf course design, most notably creating two new 18-hole courses at Costa Navarino in Greece, which opened in 2022. In February 2025, Olazábal joined the Royal Spanish Golf Federation as an advisor, focusing on mentoring young talents through the Pro Spain Team program and the National Teams.
