Venki Ramakrishnan, a distinguished British-American structural biologist, has made an indelible mark in the world of science. As the current President of the Royal Society, a position he assumed in 2015, Ramakrishnan brings his extensive experience and knowledge to one of the most prestigious scientific roles. He is celebrated for his groundbreaking work on the structure and function of the ribosome, which earned him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2009, alongside Thomas A. Steitz and Ada Yonath. Venki Ramakrishnan’s early life was steeped in academia, with both parents being scientists. His father, a biochemistry department head, and his mother, a psychology Ph.D. graduate mentored by Donald O. Hebb, provided a strong educational foundation. Venki’s upbringing in Vadodara, Gujarat, culminated in a Bachelor of Science in physics from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda in 1971. He then moved to the United States, where he earned his Ph.D. in physics from Ohio University in 1976, eventually transitioning to biology at the University of California, San Diego.

Since 1999, he has been a group leader at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, UK. His laboratory’s pioneering work in 1999 on the 5.5 angstrom resolution structure of the 30S ribosomal subunit laid the groundwork for subsequent discoveries. The following year, his team determined the complete molecular structure of the 30S subunit and its interactions with several antibiotics. This work provided invaluable insights into the fidelity mechanism of protein biosynthesis. In 2007, they achieved a milestone by determining the atomic structure of the whole ribosome in complex with its tRNA and mRNA ligands. Since 2013, Ramakrishnan has focused on using cryo-EM for determining new ribosome structures, continuing to contribute significantly to the field of structural biology.

Throughout his career, Ramakrishnan has received numerous accolades and honors. He was elected a Member of the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) in 2002, a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in 2003, and a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences in 2004. His awards include the Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine (2007), the Heatley Medal of the British Biochemical Society (2008), and the XLVI Jiménez-Díaz Prize by the Fundación Conchita Rábago (Spain) in 2014. Additionally, he is a Fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge, and a foreign Fellow of the Indian National Science Academy since 2008, an Honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences (2010), and holds honorary degrees from several prestigious institutions.

Ramakrishnan’s most cited papers, as of 2019, have appeared in prestigious journals such as “Nature, Science, and Cell”. Though knighted in the 2012 New Year Honours for services to Molecular Biology, he generally does not use the title ‘Sir’. In the same year, he was awarded the Sir Hans Krebs Medal by the FEBS.
