Christopher Meyer's Biography

Sir Christopher Meyer is one of the UK’s best-known and most candid ex-diplomats. He remains an active and opinionated commentator on world affairs, the trans-Atlantic relationship and Britain’s foreign policy.

He served as British Ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2003, during the Clinton and Bush administrations, making him the longest-serving British Ambassador to the USA since the Second World War. His period in office covered 9/11 and the run-up to the Iraq War.

In 2005 he published ‘DC Confidential’, his controversial memoirs about his life at 3100 Massachusetts Avenue. In 2009, Christopher published ‘Getting Our Way: Five Hundred Years Of International Diplomacy’, which argued that the national interest should return to the heart of Britain’s foreign policy.  Christopher has also been a Visiting Fellow at Harvard University’s Centre for International Affairs (1988-1989), press secretary to Prime Minister John Major (1994–1996), and British Ambassador to Germany. He chaired the Press Complaints Commission from 2003 to 2009.
