Stephanie Au's Biography

Stephanie Au is a Hong Kong competitive swimmer and the nation’s only five-time Olympian.

Au first represented Hong Kong at the Olympics at the young age of 16 and is the holder of 18 national records. She holds the long course record in the 800m freestyle, 50m and 100m backstroke categories. Her short course records include the 800m and 1500m freestyle, and the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke. Stephanie has also represented Hong Kong at four FINA World Aquatics Championships (2013, 2015, 2019, 2022) and was a flagbearer at the 2016 Rio Games.

Besides swimming, Stephanie’s other passion is modelling. She is an ambassador for brands like Arena, Nike, Chanel, and Calvin Klein. Au graced the cover of Vogue Hong Kong highlighting talented ‘Women in Sports’ in 2021 and the cover of Taler in 2022.

To improve mental health and wellbeing among the youths of Hong Kong, Stephanie created Mind the Waves, together with her fellow swimmers. Through YouTube videos, online live sessions and events, the trio hopes to create a safe space where people can talk about mental health, share their experiences, and provide an easy access to resources.

While brilliantly navigating the world of sports and fashion, Stephanie also uses her voice and social following to advocate for gender equality, women in sports and mental health among Hong Kong’s youths. When her swimming schedule allows, Au enjoys giving back to the community and was an ambassador to the Hong Kong Sports Association for Persons with Intellectual Disabilities race in 2018.

Known to be graceful, elegant, and humorous, Stephanie is Hong Kong’s home favourite who has taken on any challenge that’s come her way with a wide smile and good stride.

Stephanie Au graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in Environmental Economics and Policy. Her academic accomplishments include winning the 24th Hong Kong Outstanding Students Awards and being named Outstanding Young Person of Hong Kong (2010). She also serves as an Olympic Ambassador (2025–2026).
