Roger Black's Biography

Roger Black is one of the country’s most successful sportsmen having represented Great Britain for fourteen years at the highest level in the world of athletics, both as an individual 400 metre runner and as a member of the 4×400 metre relay team. He won fifteen major Championship medals including European, Commonwealth, and World Championship Gold medals.

His greatest achievement was winning the Olympic 400 metre Silver medal in 1996 and he is particularly admired for his triumphs over adversity, successfully overcoming several serious injuries and set backs throughout his career. He was British Men’s Team Captain and was awarded the MBE in 1992.

An accomplished speaker and host, Roger continues to be involved in sport off the track; he was a Team GB Ambassador for the London 2012 Olympic Games and spent some years following his retirement presenting sporting events for the BBC, including the coverage of the 2002 Sydney Olympics, the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and the World Athletics Championships in 2001. He now splits his time between motivational speaking and running a training company with business partner and fellow Olympian Steve Backley.
