Siobhán Haughey's Biography

Siobhán Haughey SBS is an Olympic competitive swimmer from Hong Kong.

She made history as the first Hong Kong swimmer to win an Olympic medal, claiming silver in both the women’s 200-meter and 100-meter freestyle at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. After this successful triumph, she went on to break the 200-metre freestyle world record and won two gold medals at the 2021 World Short Course Championships.

In 2022, Siobhán was the overall winner at the first stop of the Fina Swimming World Cup and won two gold medals in the second leg of the games. She was named “best of the best” at Hong Kong Sports Star Awards that same year.

Haughey added to her legacy at the Paris 2024 Olympics by securing bronze in the same events, becoming the first Hong Kong athlete to win four Olympic medals. A world record holder in the 200-meter freestyle, she has set 24 Hong Kong records and six Asian records, making her the most decorated Hong Kong athlete.

She represents Energy Standard in the International Swimming League.

Siobhán uses her voice to actively encourage the young in Hong Kong to get involved in sports. She believes “magic happens outside your comfort zone” and that it is important for kids to know that they can achieve anything, even if no one has done it before. Using herself as an example, she says, “just because no one from Hong Kong had won an Olympic medal in swimming before, didn’t mean I couldn’t do it,”

Being a popular public figure, Siobhán understands the mental toll that comes with fame and having to perform at a high level consistently. She speaks about her post-Olympic struggles with a positive mindset and works hard to overcome challenges in and out of the pool.
