Wolfgang Ischinger's Biography

Wolfgang Ischinger is a German diplomat who has held various high-profile positions in government. He is one of the most respected political figures with a deep passion for helping build peace and security worldwide. As a public speaker, he is sought-after for his decades of experience in diplomacy and international relations.

In 2008, Wolfgang joined the Munich Security Conference, an international committee hosting annual conferences to discuss global security policies. He presided as Chairman of the committee until 2022, when he became President of the Foundation Council. He served as Germany’s ambassador in international countries, including the United States (2001-06) and the United Kingdom (2006-08). Wolfgang has held a variety of diplomatic and governmental offices, including Berlin’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Allianz SE’s Global Head of Government Relations,
He was co-chair of the Transatlantic Task Force of the Federal Chancellor Helmut Schmidt Foundation and the German Marshall Fund. He is also a Professor Emeritus at the Hertie School in Berlin, specialising in security policy and diplomatic operations.

Wolfgang has written extensively on foreign policy, security and arms control, and European and transatlantic issues. His work has been featured in many prestigious publications, and is considered a thought leader in the industry.

Wolfgang is highly decorated, having received many awards for his work. Among these are the prestigious Nunn-Lugar Award for Promoting Nuclear Security, the Order of the Rising Sun 2nd class, and the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg. He also received the Leo Baeck Institute’s Leo Baeck Medal for his humanitarian efforts to advance social equality and tolerance.

He is a highly respected figure in the world of diplomacy. He is currently the Founding Director of the Hertie School’s Centre for International Security and a Senior Fellow at the institution. Wolfgang is also on the international advisory board of Investcorp and a member of the Kekst CNC Global Advisory Board.

He is extensively involved with non-profits, sitting on the board of several organisations. These include the American Academy in Berlin, American Field Service Germany, the EastWest Institute, the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, World Economic Forum and the International Crisis Group.
