Lara Setrakian's Biography

Lara Setrakian is an award-winning journalist, digital strategist and social impact entrepreneur. She is the founding CEO of News Deeply, a network of digital media platforms that convene stakeholders and passionate communities on the world’s biggest challenges. Her team’s inaugural site, Syria Deeply, won the Excellence in Online Journalism Award from the National Press Foundation and was called “The Future of News” by TIME Magazine. She went on to launch Ebola Deeply, Water Deeply, Refugees Deeply, Oceans Deeply, Malnutrition Deeply and Women’s Advancement Deeply.

Before launching News Deeply Lara was a foreign correspondent for ABC News and Bloomberg Television, where she reported groundbreaking stories from the Middle East. Fast Company named Lara as one of the “Most Creative People in Business,” while Inc. Magazine called her one of “8 Women Who Could Own the Future.” Fresco Capital named her an Entrepreneur-in-Residence and subsequently an Impact Partner, supporting fast-growing portfolio companies on social impact and innovation.

A Harvard graduate, Lara began her media career as the News Director of Harvard Radio Broadcasting (WHRB). She was named a Young Global Leader of the World Economic Forum and a Life Member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She has served on the Global Future Council on Media, Entertainment and Culture and has been featured in publications including Mashable, TechCrunch, the Guardian, the New York Times and on MSNBC, CNN and NPR.  Lara was named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business and one of Marie Claire Magazine’s Women on Top.

Her TED talk ‘How to Fix a Broken News Industry’ has been translated into 27 languages and viewed more than a million times on TED.com.
