Matt Lindley's Biography
Matt Lindley is a serving airline pilot and former RAF pilot who applies his experiences in leadership, accountability, and culture to the business world.
After a brief spell at Ford dealing with culture and management strategy change, Matt joined the RAF. Serving for over a decade, he piloted fast jets before specialising in VIP transportation and training programmes. Moving to commercial aviation, Matt joined Britain’s flag carrier airline, flying 747s on routes to the US and Asia.
Matt speaks candidly about being one of the first openly gay pilots in the Armed Forces. Joining the RAF at a time when being openly gay could have resulted in dismissal or a prison sentence, he consciously suppressed his sexuality whilst pursuing his childhood dream to fly. He describes how the RAF adapted its culture from one of open hostility towards gay personnel to acceptance and support, and how supportive leadership transformed his ability to perform at his best.
Drawing on his military and commercial aviation experience, Matt explores the relationship between culture, leadership, mental resilience, and performance under pressure. His work focuses on human factors, decision-making, stress performance, and how organisations can reduce error by creating open, supportive cultures rather than blame-driven environments.
Alongside his flying career, Matt has worked extensively with the NHS and private sector, applying lessons from aviation to improve human factors and error management. In 2017 he was the subject matter expert on the BBC Radio 4 and World Service programme From the Cockpit to the Operating Theatre.
Using psychology, case studies, and interactive training, Matt explains why people make mistakes at work and offers practical ways organisations can improve communication, leadership, wellbeing, and performance.
