James Kynge's Biography

James Kynge is Associate Editor and Global China Editor at the Financial Times. He has spent 18 of the past 28 years working in China, latterly as the Financial Times’ bureau chief in Beijing. He also headed up the business operations of the Pearson Group of companies in China until 2008. He remains chairman of FT Confidential Research, a premium research service on China and South East Asia that he founded in 2009.

He is the 2017 winner of the prestigious Harold Wincott award for journalism for his coverage of China and its complex relationship with rest of the world.

His prize-winning book “China Shakes the World” (2006) was an international bestseller, translated into 19 languages. Outside the office, he encourages young people in the UK to engage with China as a British Council “leading light” and as Honorary President of the ChineseSpeakers Association, an NGO that assists young people who speak Chinese to find employment opportunities.
