Douglas MacMillan's Biography

Douglas MacMillan Speaker Profile:

Doug MacMillan is a technology reporter for The Wall Street Journal in San Francisco. He covers venture capital and startups along with tech policy and economics, exploring how tech companies acquire power and use it to shape people’s lives.

His page one stories for the newspaper revealed Snapchat’s fateful decision to walk away from a $3 billion offer from Facebook and explained why Uber has struggled to build a second line of business in local logistics.

Prior to WSJ, he was a reporter with Bloomberg News and Bloomberg Businessweek, where he covered Yahoo, Twitter and Facebook in addition to writing profiles of Mark Zuckerberg, Marissa Mayer, and Groupon’s Andrew Mason. His reporting on the high-profile IPOs of Zynga and Groupon required those companies to add disclosures to their prospectus documents. In 2009, MacMillan coined the term “app economy” in a cover story he co-wrote on apps. A native of Dayton, Ohio and a graduate of Vanderbilt University, he began his career as an intern at Rolling Stone in New York.
