Diane Coyle's Biography

Prof. Dame Diane Coyle CBE is Co-Director of the Bennett Institute for Public Policy at the University of Cambridge.   Prior to her current role, she was Professor of Economics at the University of Manchester and an advisor to the UK Treasury. Diane has also held a range of public service roles such as Vice Chair of the BBC Trust (2006-2014), member of the Competition Commission (2001-2009), member of the Migration Advisory Committee (2009-2014) and member of the Natural Capital Committee (2016-2019).

Diane founded the consultancy group, The Enlightened Economist, and has written books including GDP: A Brief but Affectionate History (2015), Markets, State & People: Economics for Public Policy (2020) and the  Cogs and Monsters: What Economics Is, and What It Should Be (2021) In this book, Diane offers a road map for how economics can adapt to the rewiring of society, including by digital technologies, and realize its potential to play a hugely positive role in the twenty-first century.

She was previously Economics Editor of The Independent for eight years.  During this time, she won the Wincott Award for Senior Financial Journalist of the Year.  Before that she worked for Investors Chronicle, as European Editor, launching and editing the European section of the magazine.

Diane is particularly passionate about making economics accessible to different people and was awarded a CBE for her contribution to the public understanding of economics in the 2018 New Years Honours List. She became a DBE – Dame Commander in the 2023 Birthday Honours List.
