Zanny Minton Beddoes's Biography

Zanny Minton Beddoes is Editor-in-Chief of The Economist, the first female editor in its 172-history. She was previously the Business Affairs Editor, who was responsible for the newspaper’s coverage of business, finance and science.  Zanny Minton Beddoes is an excellent choice as the keynote speaker and interviewer for a business conference.

Prior to taking her position at the Economist, she was based in Washington D.C. as the Economics Editor (2008-14), overseeing the magazine’s global economics coverage and managing its team of writers all over the world; she was the US Economics Editor from 2002 to 2008.

Now one of the very few women at the top of global journalism, Zanny began her career working as an adviser to the Minister of Finance in Poland, as part of a small group headed by Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Harvard University. From 1992 to 1994 she served as an economist with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where she worked on macroeconomic adjustment programs in Africa and the transition economies of Eastern Europe.

Before moving to Washington in April 1996, Zanny wrote as The Economist’s emerging markets correspondent based in London. During this period she travelled widely in Latin America and Eastern Europe, covering economic developments by writing editorials and country analyses. She has also written extensive surveys of the World Economy, Latin American finance, global finance and Central Asia.

Zanny Minton Beddoes is a regular television and radio commentator: in the US she has appeared on NPR’s “Morning Edition”; PBS “Newshour”, Fareed Zakaria GPS, the Bill Maher Show and the Charlie Rose Show. In Britain, she has appeared on Newsnight and the Today programme.

She is a trustee of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Committee for Economic Development.
