Simon Wright's Biography

Simon Wright is the Industry Editor for The Economist’s print edition, writing on cars, planes, ships, manufacturing and bits of infrastructure. Previously, writing for the same newspaper, Simon was the Energy and Commodities Correspondent (2010-13) where he covered everything from the oil and gas industry to mining, shipping, steel and large infrastructure projects.

He has travelled extensively across America to cover the US shale gas revolution, and his research debunks many of the myths perpetuated by the mainstream media. Simon has also written on shale gas in Europe, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and exploration in the Arctic circle. His recent research has centred around the future of Big Oil.

Simon Wright first joined The Economist in 1989 as a researcher. Since then his roles have included stints as the Letters Editor, “The world this week” Editor, and writing about business and finance for economist.com. He has also been deputy news editor for the paper’s website.
