Rumman Chowdhury's Biography

Rumman Chowdhury is a pioneer in the field of responsible and ethical AI.

Dr. Chowdhury currently runs Parity Consulting, Parity Responsible Innovation Fund, and is a Responsible AI Fellow at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University. She is also a Research Affiliate at the Minderoo Center for Democracy and Technology at Cambridge University and a visiting researcher at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

Previously, Rumman was the Director of META (ML Ethics, Transparency, and Accountability) at Twitter. There she led a team of applied researchers and engineers to identify and mitigate algorithmic harms on the platform. By applying algorithmic ethics and creating socio-technical solutions, she strived to make Twitter more transparent and accountable.

To bridge the translation gap between risk, legal and data terms, Rumman founded Parity in 2020, and was its former CEO. Rumman was also the Global Lead for Responsible AI at Accenture Applied Intelligence, where she created the Fairness Tool, a first-in-industry algorithmic tool to identify and mitigate bias in AI systems.

Dr. Chowdhury’s passion lies at the intersection of artificial intelligence and humanity. She hopes to cultivate and grow the next wave of technology-forward companies to use emerging technologies responsibly. Deeply engaged in AI global policy, Rumman Chowdhury also serves as a board member of the UK Center for Data Ethics and Innovation, and on UNESCO’s Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development. She has helped shape policy as advisor to the UK House of Lords Parliamentary group on AI, in her testimony to the FTC, New York City Algorithmic Commission, the UN, OECD, Partnership on AI, and other global AI and ethics organisations.

Other boards Rumman serves on include Oxford University’s Commission on AI and Governance; AI4All, a group dedicated to drawing underrepresented groups into STEM; the SSRC’s Just Tech Advisory Group; the University of Virginia’s Data Science Program, and Patterns, a data science journal by the publishers of Cell.

Rumman regularly lends her thoughts and contributes to the Atlantic, Forbes, Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, MIT Technology Review and VentureBeat. She has been featured on the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, BBC, Nikkei Business Times, among many other international media outlets. In 2017, Dr. Chowdhury was named one of BBC’s 100 Women and in 2018, named by Forbes as one of Five Who Are Shaping AI. She has been recognised as one of Bay Area’s top 40 under 40, and is a member of the British Royal Society of the Arts (RSA).

Rumman Chowdhury is an internationally recognised speaker on artificial intelligence, the future of work, and technology ethics. She has two undergraduate degrees from MIT, a master’s from Columbia University, and a PhD from the University of California, San Diego.
