Mikki Kendall's Biography

Mikki Kendall is a writer, activist, essayist and social media commentator known for her incisive commentary on social justice issues. As a keynote speaker, she is a powerful voice in the modern feminist movement, and she isn’t afraid to speak her mind on topics related to race and gender relations.

Since 2013, Mikki has been widely recognised as one of the most prolific and outspoken writers on justice issues facing society. She aims to give a voice to those often marginalised and create change in her community and other communities worldwide. She is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and social justice issues. Using her voice on social media to talk about topics that matter to her most, Mikki has addressed and shed light on various issues plaguing society, including feminism, racism, and body positivity. In addition to her social media and online presence, most notably on Twitter as a member of Black Twitter, Mikki often addresses global audiences at universities, industry events and conferences.
Before shifting her focus to full-time writing, Mikki worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs and previously served in the United States Army.

In line with her work promoting equality for marginalised groups, Mikki published the incisive essay collection Hood Feminism (2020). The New York Times bestselling book challenges the validity of the modern feminism movement, outlining how it’s plagued with shortcomings for most women and only a select few benefit from it. She is the author of the 2019 historical graphic novel Amazons, Abolitionists, and Activists. She also edited the 2016 science fiction compilation Hidden Youth.

As a social commentator and columnist, Mikki has contributed to numerous publications, including Time, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, Vogue, Essence, NBC News, Bustle and Eater. She has provided cultural insights for BBC, NPR, Good Morning America and The Daily Show.

In 2016 she penned an essay titled Hot Sauce in Her Bag, which received a Best Food Essay Award from the Association of Food Journalists.

Mikki has dedicated her career to fighting for gender equality. As a keynote speaker, she is a frequent guest at global conferences and events focusing on the importance of intersectionality in feminism and how all movements for social justice must work together to create real change. Mikki is passionate about social justice and works to make the world a better place for everyone.
