Lucas Chancel's Biography

Lucas Chancel is a French Economist who specialises in global inequality, European political economy and Sustainable development. He is Co-Director and Senior Economist of the World Inequality Lab and Co-Director of the World Inequality Database. He is the author of ‘Unsustainable inequalities: social justice and the environment’ (2020), named in the Financial Times’s ‘best economics book of 2020’ and Nature’s selection of best science books.

Chancel is an Affiliate Professor in the Sciences Po Paris’ School of Public Affairs, Associate Researcher at the Paris School of Economics and Associate Researcher at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations. He participated in the United Nations Senior Management group, directly advising the UN Secretary General on inequality and Beyond-GDP indicators.

Previously, Chancel was a Lecturer at Sciences Po Paris (2012-20) and Research Fellow & Coordinator at the World Inequality Lab, Paris (2015-17). He worked at the Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations from 2011-17, where he went from Research Fellow to Senior Research Fellow.

Chancel has authored and co-authored several books and articles on the subject of economics and inequality. Chancel’s latest book, ‘Unsustainable inequalities: social justice and the environment’ (2020), was featured in the Financial Times’ ‘Best books of 2020 in economics’ and Nature’s ‘top science picks’. He was a lead author in the ‘United Nations Human Development Report 2019’ and collaboration on the ‘World Inequality Report 2018’.

Lucas Chancel’s work has received several awards and accolades, including the Paris Research University (PSL) Prize for the best PhD Thesis (2019), the United Nations Development Program Grant (2019), the Rockefeller Foundation Grant (2019-2020), the Sloan Foundation Grant (2018) and the Entente Cordiale Scholarship (2010).

He completed a PhD in Economics from the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS). Prior to this, Chancel received master’s degrees in Economics and Public policy from Ecole Polytechnique, Sciences Po and ENSAE, as well as in Sustainable Energy Engineering from the Imperial College London. He also studied at the London School of Economics and Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Delhi.
