Luc Julia is a renowned technologist, entrepreneur, and executive who has made significant contributions to the field of artificial intelligence (AI). He is known for his expertise in voice interfaces and his work on connected devices, smart cars, and virtual assistants.
Luc began his career as a researcher at SRI International, located in Silicon Valley, where he worked on voice interfaces. He later co-founded Nuance Communications, a leader in the field of voice recognition, and founded the Computer-Human Interaction Center (CHIC), which developed the first connected refrigerators and worked on smart car prototypes with BMW.
In the early 2000s, Luc developed the startup “Orb,” which created software to transform PCs into multimedia servers and was eventually sold to Qualcomm. He also worked at Hewlett-Packard, where he developed connected printers. In 1997, he filed patents for what would later become Siri and developed the ancestor of the voice assistant, “The Assistant,” with his friend Adam Cheyer.
Luc joined Apple in 2011 to work on the development of Siri and led the team for a year. In 2012, he joined Samsung as Vice President for Innovation, where he led the group’s innovation center in California and worked on new technologies related to the Internet of Things, data, and AI. In 2018, he founded and directed the Samsung Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) in Paris.
In 2021, Luc left Samsung and joined Renault as Scientific Director, in charge of R&D within the software division. His goal is to instill a “tech culture” within the automotive group and work on projects that can be integrated quickly into vehicles.
Luc has authored the book “Artificial Intelligence Does Not Exist” to deconstruct received ideas about AI and criticize alarmist discourse on the dangers of AI. He has been featured in Vanity Fair’s ranking of the 50 most influential French people in the world and has been recognized for his contributions to AI.
Luc holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the Institute National Polytechnique de Grenoble in France and has obtained American citizenship.
