Gregg Carlstrom's Biography

Gregg Carlstrom, is an esteemed journalist and author, renowned for his in-depth reporting and analysis of Middle Eastern politics and society. Currently a Middle East correspondent for The Economist, Carlstrom’s insightful coverage spans a broad range of topics, including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, regional geopolitics, and the complexities of Middle Eastern societies.

He has covered the Middle East for the past 15 years. He has reported on many of the region’s big events firsthand, from revolutionary Egypt in 2011 to Israel and Gaza in the weeks and months after October 7th. He also writes regularly about economics in the region: the ambitious efforts at diversification in the Gulf, and the more troubled economies elsewhere.

His first book, How Long Will Israel Survive: The Threat from Within, was published in 2017. It looked at the growing schisms in Israeli society, a country that was fracturing into tribes with little shared understanding of their identity.

Gregg is interviewed regularly on television and radio in America, Europe and the Middle East, and is a regular contributor to The Economist’s podcasts and subscriber events. As a speaker, he is called on both to moderate conferences and to share his insights about politics and economics.

He is based in Dubai, with previous stints in Beirut, Cairo, Doha and Tel Aviv, and travels regularly throughout the Middle East.
