Emma Seppala's Biography

Emma Seppala PhD, is a world-renowned social psychologist, author, and keynote speaker. She is a highly sought-after expert speaker who is a familiar voice on happiness, well-being, and resilience, engaging leaders to create positive organisations and foster healthy organisational cultures.

Since 2017, Emma has been a Lecturer at Yale School of Management, focusing on leadership behaviour, interpersonal skills, well-being, and connectedness. She is also the Faculty Director of the Yale School of Management’s Women’s Leadership Program and the Science Director of Stanford University’s Center for Compassion and Altruism Research and Education.

Emma is the bestselling author of The Happiness Track (2016). The book, which has been translated into dozens of languages, explores how happiness can exponentially increase one’s success. She is also the co-author and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Compassion Science (2017), the world’s first academic handbook on compassion science.
As a leading mental health and well-being specialist, Emma frequently contributes to several psychology journals and publications such as Psychology Today, Harvard Business Review, TIME and The Washington Post. Her work has been featured and published by preeminent outlets, including NPR, The New York Times, the World Economic Forum, The Washington Post, and CBSNews. She has also been featured in various documentaries such as Free the Mind, Bullied, The Altruism Revolution, and What You Do Matters.

Emma has received many research funding and service accolades, including Stanford University’s James W. Lyons Award for developing Stanford’s first educational class on the psychology of happiness and establishing student well-being programmes.

In 2009, Emma completed her PhD in Psychology from Stanford University. This accomplishment complements her Master of Arts in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Columbia University and her Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature from Yale University.

Emma’s work focuses on how to cultivate happiness and resilience in ourselves and others. She believes that by understanding the mind-body connection, we can learn to better care for ourselves both physically and emotionally. She is a returning keynote speaker at TEDx conferences and has taught workshops at Google, Facebook, and Yale University.
