David Schonthal's Biography
David Schonthal is an award-winning business school Professor, columnist, author, entrepreneur, and venture capitalist who has invested in and advised many companies over the last two decades. As a speaker, he has addressed global audiences, discussing various topics related to entrepreneurship and innovation.
Since 2012, David has served at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Joining the faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor, he became an associate professor and has served as a Clinical Professor of Strategy since 2020. He’s a Director of the Levy Institute for Entrepreneurial Practice and a Faculty Director of the Zell Fellows program – an internal initiative that funds startups created y students. David also holds visiting professorship at Tel Aviv University and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
David has a lot of experience with businesses, having co-founded Matter, an innovation centre supporting entrepreneurship within the healthcare industry. He is an Operating Partner at 7Wire Ventures, a company that helps create new technology in the healthcare industry. He’s a Venture Partner at Pritzker Group Venture Capital, which invests in businesses focused on consumer and enterprise marketplaces. David is an Advisor for the Japanese venture capital firm Design for Ventures (D4V), investing in startups centred on design.
In 2021, David co-authored the Wall Street Journal, USA Today and Amazon bestseller The Human Element (2021). The book explores the factors that influence and motivate human behaviour and how to use those factors to affect desired outcomes. Since 2022, he’s been a regular contributor to Inc magazine’s “The Next Thing” column, providing insight into innovation topics ranging from entrepreneurship to design strategy and healthcare solutions. He’s also a frequent columnist for publications such as Harvard Business Review, Forbes and Fortune.
David is honoured on the “40 Under 40” list for Crain’s Chicago Business magazine and a finalist for Thinkers50 Distinguished Achievement Award. He’s a five-time recipient of the Executive MBA Outstanding Professor and the Faculty Impact award for teaching excellence from Kellogg University. He also holds a distinction from Publishers Weekly for a bestselling author.
