Charlie Luxton's Biography

Charlie Luxton is an architectural designer who combines his design work with writing and presenting television programmes. He is passionate about the environment and communicating his enthusiasm for sustainable architecture and eco-friendly design. Charlie is interested in creating architecture fit for the 21st century; designs that respond to local materials, traditions and climate.

With twelve years experience designing environmental buildings, sustainability informs all of his design decisions. In 2000, he became a founding director of Free State, the design and communications company that uses the built environment to create awareness far beyond the reach of traditional media.

Charlie is a popular television presenter. In 2000, he presented a six part series called Modern British Architects for Channel 5. He then presented and wrote Not All Houses Are Square – a three part series for Channel 4 followed by a second series Not All Bricks And Mortar. He has also presented two series for US networks: Artland USA saw Charlie driving across the country looking at influential architecture, while Vertical City enabled him to look at the world’s most famous skyscrapers from the top down, whilst hanging from a window washer’s cradle. He continues to appear regularly on both radio and television.

A notable project, and perhaps his most ambitious, was to front the Sky One series, The Great Treehouse Challenge, building spectacular treehouses for local communities and charities.
