Cathy Mulligan's Biography

Dr Cathy Mulligan is a researcher, author and advisor on Digital Transformation and emerging technologies.  Cathy is well-known for her work on digital technologies’ social and environmental implications, particularly AI, blockchain and 5G.

Cathy has held various academic roles across Europe and has been a Fellow of the World Economic Forum for 5 years. Cathy is a Visiting Lecturer at Imperial College and Honorary Senior Research Associate in the computer science department at UCL. Cathy was a founding Co-Director of the Imperial College Centre for Cryptocurrency Research and Engineering – one of the world’s first research centres in blockchain. In 2019, she was a member of the United Nations Secretary General’s High-Level Panel on Digital Cooperation.

Dr Mulligan actively researches digital transformation and technologies and in addition to her theoretical research, translates her research into real-world solutions for companies and end-user communities.  Cathy pioneered the approach of digital supply chains and their impacts on blockchain and AI within a broad array of technologies.  She has led multiple research projects across the UK, EU, Australia, India and Malaysia related to new economic structures enabled by the digital economy, particularly the creation of trust in digitally-enabled industries, governments and citizen-centric smart/sustainable cities.

She regularly advises on the role of digital technologies to various governments and is an advisor to several high-tech start-ups.

She has over 25 years of experience in various senior corporate (VP / CTO Roles) and academic research roles and has written 7 books on digital technologies.  Her most recent book is ‘5G Networks – Powering Digitalization‘.  Previous books include ‘Internet of Things: Technologies and Applications for a New Age of Intelligence ‘.
