Andy Haldane's Biography

Andrew Haldane is the former Chief Economist at The Bank of England.

As the executive director of monetary analysis and statistics at the Bank England, he was often referenced as a leading expert on financial stability and has been described as a “rising star central banker” by Forbes following his empowering “The Dog and the Frisbee speech” in 2012, where he argued that complex regulations could not control complex financial systems.

Andrew has authored about 100 articles on various financial topics, including payment systems, central bank independence and international financial crises. He has written a book on Fixing Financial Crises in the 21st Century and further co-authored a book about The Future of Payment Systems.

For his contribution to the enhancement of natural knowledge, Andrew was elected a Fellowship of the Royal Society in 2021, an award he holds in addition to his 2016 election as a Fellow at the Academy of Social Sciences. He has also been named one of Time magazine’s world’s 100 most influential people (2014).

Andrew is well known for his criticism of the financial sector and often urges politicians and bankers to show more morality and integrity, as such, he is a co-founder and trustee of the Pro Bono-Economics charity, which strives to encourage economists to aid charities on a pro bono basis by donating their time and expertise. He’s also worked extensively with other charities such as National Numeracy, where he now serves as Vice-Chair and is Chair of the National Numeracy Leadership Council.

Andrew chairs the Government’s Levelling Up Advisory Council and is a member of the Chancellor’s Council of Economic Advisors. He was the Permanent Secretary for Levelling Up at the Cabinet Office from September 2021 to March 2022.

Among other positions, he is Honorary Professor at the Universities of Nottingham, Manchester and Exeter, Visiting Professor at King’s College, London and a Fellow of the Royal Society and the Academy of Social Sciences.
