Speaker Spotlight: Politics, Polling & Predictions - Introducing G. Elliott Morris
We are delighted to welcome G. Elliott Morris to Chartwell Speakers.
Elliott is a data-driven author and journalist. In late 2023, he was appointed Editorial Director of Data Analytics at ABC News, where he oversees the popular data-journalism, FiveThirtyEight. Previously he worked with The Economist.
Elliott is the author of ‘Strength in Numbers: How polls work and why we need them’, published by Norton in 2022.
About the book, The Guardian wrote “Morris is right that, for all its problems, polling remains our best tool for understanding how people think about politics. The alternative is prejudice and guesswork.“
While FiveThirtyEight focuses mainly on the US political landscape, his expertise and insights on polling, election data and forecasting apply to other regions and of course to the business world. We live in a world where numbers guide decision-making and where uncertainty can be reduced by the smart interpretation of data and more intelligent forecasting.
In a year with multiple major global elections, Elliott is the ideal expert to share his insights on polling, predictions and how a better understanding of ‘numbers’ will inform the management of uncertainty. Through such a lens, truth and democracy can be preserved in a world when false signals, bad data and partisan politics are likely to skew reality.
