Lessons from the F1 Fast Lane

Scott Lincoln

Formula One is widely regarded to be one of the most highly competitive and volatile sports. Over the past few years, it has seen its popularity sky rocket and this can be attributed to a few key reasons.

The first is the lifting of the social media restrictions placed on drivers and teams which has allowed them to bridge the gap between teams and fans, bringing the latter ever closer to the racetrack.

The second comes from a partnership with Amazon Web Services to provide die-hard fans with a plethora of stats and data allowing them a deeper insight into the inner workings of the sport.

The third can be attributed to the phenomenally successful show Drive to Survive. Now in its fourth season, the show follows the trials and tribulations of drivers and their teams and is said to have brought in around 70 million new fans, most notably the US. What’s clear to see is that fans’ enjoyment of the sport goes far beyond the racetrack.

Despite ever-evolving rules, F1 continues to deliver investment across technology, innovation and branding. It provides a great example of a globalised and thriving industry operating efficiently within fiscal and regulatory restrictions. In this way, F1 echoes conditions that a lot of businesses face today and can therefore provide lessons that are applicable to organisations across sectors.
