Trade, Tariffs & Trumponomics 2.0

Whilst the dust settles after Trump’s historic comeback and return to the White House, analysts have been looking into the seismic global economic implications.

Domestic Economic Growth: Boosted Profits and Stronger Dollar

Domestically, the promise of lower taxes and looser regulation for companies will likely mean businesses can boost their profits. This possibility has been reflected within the last week in the share prices of many major American businesses and the value of the dollar which is increasing America’s purchasing power.

Global Concerns: Tariffs and Trade Tensions with Europe and Beyond

However, globally, Trump’s victory has been met more apprehensively with the Euro, Pound and Yen all slumping in value. On the campaign trail Trump described tariff as “the most beautiful word in the dictionary” – a sentiment that will not be shared around the world. He has suggested a blanket 20% tariff on all goods imported to the US, and upped this to 60% for Chinese products, and as high as 2000% for vehicles built in Mexico.

Uncertainty Looms Over European Trade and Capital Relocation

It is not explicitly clear yet what his plans for Europe are although he has ominously said the EU could pay a big price for not buying enough American products and Trump has made no secret of his desire to double down on America’s advantage of attracting capital relocation. With the cost of doing business going up, global economies and multinational organisations are bracing themselves for some volatile years and preparing ways to best insulate themselves from punitive advances of this new era of American politics.
