The world goes to the polls...
2024 is a bumper chapter in the story book of democracy. In an incredible milestone, over four billion people – equating to over half of the world’s population – across sixty nations will take to the polls.
These elections will involve a wide range of of legislative practices and sizes, from India’s largest multi-day voting process in the world, to North Macedonia’s slightly smaller affair. In the UK, the incumbent Conservative party who have been in power for fourteen years during some seismic shifts in UK society are facing electoral oblivion, potentially for years to come.
Other races are harder to call– in echoes of 2020, Joe Biden will most likely be facing off against the embattled challenger in Donald Trump to secure the role of US President. This result will have enormous geopolitical ramifications including around US membership of intergovernmental organisations like NATO and thus funding for allies in Ukraine and the Middle East.
One thing for sure is that we will be feeling the effects of the 2024 polling cards for generations to come!
