Tom Chatfield's Biography

Dr Tom Chatfield is a tech philosopher, author, advisor and speaker, with a special interest in critical thinking, Artificial Intelligence and future skills.

His recent work includes designing and presenting the Economist’s new critical thinking and AI business courses; running international seminars on the critically discerning use of AI; writing the forthcoming ‘Economist Guide to Critical Thinking’; and authoring a series of white papers for Sage on the future of leadership in an age of AI. He’s also the co-founder of a research consortium developing a prototype AI critical thinking tutor for universities.

An experienced Chair and NED, Tom is a member of the British Library Advisory Council; Associate at the interdisciplinary think-tank Perspectiva; and former Chair of both the Authors’ Licensing and Collecting Society and of the Copyright Licensing Agency. His books exploring digital culture—including ‘Wise Animals’, ‘ow to Think’, ‘How To Thrive in the Digital Age’ and ‘Fun Inc’—are published in over thirty languages. His bestselling critical thinking textbooks are used at companies, universities and institutions across the world. He’s also an award-winning novelist and children’s author.

Over the past decade, he has developed major online courses for universities and businesses; been a guest faculty member at the Said Business School, Oxford, and Associate at the Oxford Internet Institute; and worked as a consultant and advisor with some of the world’s leading companies. Previous collaborators include Google, the BBC, the UN, BMJ and Allianz.

Past speaking appearances include TED Global and the Cannes Lions Festival; authors@Google; the World Congress on Information Technology; the UK Houses of Parliament and European Parliament; and the US National Academy of Sciences. He also guest lectures at universities across the UK, Europe and US, and broadcasts frequently in the national and international media.

Tom Chatfield’s doctorate is from at St John’s College, Oxford – he was named one of the world’s 100 leading thinkers by think tank LSDP.
