Sarah Outen's Biography

Sarah Outen MBE is a world-record breaking adventurer, published author, film maker, therapist and inspirational speaker, whose gruelling expeditions have established her as a much-sought after speaker.

Sarah spent over ten years pursuing extraordinary adventures, often solo and in remote locations all over the world.  During her ‘London2London: Via the World’ expedition, in which she completed a 25,000 mile loop of the northern hemisphere over 4.5 years.  She rowed two of the world’s toughest ocean routes, cycled across mountains in winter and deserts in summer, and kayaked remotely for thousands of miles. She attracted a global following for this expedition and raised tens of thousands for charity.

Sarah earned several world records and firsts for her ocean rowing.  She first made it into the Guinness Book of Records aged 24 with her world-first 124 day solo row across the Indian Ocean, which earned her an MBE.  She made it into the record books once more in 2013 when she became the first person to row solo from Japan to Alaska.

Her expeditions have brought her great success, but they have not been without setbacks, including costing her health.  Sarah speaks candidly about the highs and lows of expedition life, such as her traumatic mid-ocean rescue when she was caught in a typhoon in the North Pacific, as well as how she regrouped and rebuilt herself to take on the challenge again just nine months later.

Sarah is the author of two books; “Dare to Do: How I Looped the Planet by Bike and Boat – 25,000 Miles, Five Years and a Few Adventures: Taking on the planet by bike and boat” (2016) and “A Dip in the Ocean: Rowing Solo Across the Indian” (2011).  She has also produced an award-winning feature length film of her journeys, titled “Home”.

Sarah is a gifted storyteller and her warm, disarming manner is suited to any audience.  She is able to expertly express the drama and tension of her exciting journeys with her trademark authenticity.  She tailors her talks to clients’ goals and expertly weaves tailored learnings into her narratives, leaving audiences feeling empowered and capable of riding out whatever storms they may face.

‘Your talk was amazing – authentic, heart felt and incredibly inspiring. As I looked across the screen on Zoom I could see how your words were landing with the participants. I held coaching session after your talk and several of them told me how much they were impacted by your words.
Ashridge, 2021
‘I wanted to reach out and share the overwhelming positive response to your talk. I was personally inspired as a female leader and think what you’ve achieved is incredible. Our best speaker yet. The team really picked up on the flexibility, adaptability and agility commentary as well as our own roles (and responsibility) as “The Village” to support each other along the way. The warmth and candidness of the whole piece also really struck home.’
Keter, 2022
