Robert Winston's Biography

Lord Professor Robert Winston is a BAFTA award winning television presenter and an eminent authority on medical science, with over 300 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He holds 26 patents and was a pioneer in genetic screening and gynaecological surgery.

He has been instrumental in attempting to get children to engage with science through his television programs, guest lectures and the Reach Out Lab, which allows children to perform scientific experiments at Imperial College. He gives 20–30 public lectures a year on scientific subjects and has helped to promote science literacy and education by founding the Reach Out Laboratory in Imperial College.

He is a Faraday Medal holder of the Royal Society and a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Institute of Education and the Royal Academy of Engineering. He was made a life peer in 1995, speaks regularly in the House of Lords on the topics of education, science and medicine and was voted Peer of the Year in 2008. Robert currently holds honourary doctorates from sixteen universities.

He is also a keen patron of the arts as a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts, a board member of the Lyceum Theatre and as a member of the Athenaeum club. Robert is also Chairman of the Council at the Royal College of Music.
