Pier Carlo Padoan's Biography

Pier Carlo Padoan was the Italian Minister of Economy and Finance from 21st February 2014 to 1st June 2018.

Padoan is an academic and was Professor of Economics at the University La Sapienza of Rome until 2007. From 1992 until 2001 he also held positions at the College of Europe, Bruges, and Warsaw. He was also a visiting professor at Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium, University of Urbino, Italy, Universidad de la Plata, Argentina, and University of Tokyo, Japan. During this time, he was widely published in the fields of European economics and politics.

From 1998 to 2001, Pier Carlo Padoan served as Economic Adviser to the Italian Prime Ministers, Massimo D’Alema and Giuliano Amato, in charge of international economic policies. He was responsible for co-ordinating the Italian position in the Agenda 2000 negotiations for the EU budget, Lisbon Agenda, European Council, bilateral meetings, and G8 Summits.

From 2001 to 2005, Padoan was the Italian Executive Director at the International Monetary Fund, with responsibility for Greece, Portugal, San Marino, Albania and Timor Leste. He served as a member of the Board and chaired a number of Board Committees. During his mandate at the IMF he was also in charge of European Co-ordination.

On 1st June 2007, Pier Carlo Padoan was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the OECD. On 1st December 2009, he also took on the position of Chief Economist. In addition to heading the Economics Department, Padoan was the G20 Finance Deputy for the OECD and has also lead the Strategic Response, the Green Growth and Innovation initiatives of the Organisation.

He has been a consultant to the World Bank, European Commission, and European Central Bank.
