Nirmalya Kumar's Biography
Nirmalya Kumar is a professor and one of the most well-respected marketing experts globally. As a keynote speaker, he has extensively covered the topic of marketing and its various subfields and is a trusted advisor to numerous organisations, including several large Fortune 500 companies.
Since 2017, Nirmalya has been a Lee Kong Chian Professor of Marketing and the Area Coordinator of Marketing at Singapore Management University. He is a distinguished fellow of the INSEAD Emerging Markets Institute and previously served on the Tata Group’s executive council as its Head of Strategy. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors for Tata Capital and Tata Chemicals.
He has held roles as a Professor of Marketing at various institutes and universities such as London Business School, Harvard Business School, Northwestern University, Pennsylvania State University and Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
Nirmalya is an acclaimed writer who has published numerous books such as Marketing as Strategy (2004), Global Marketing (2005), India’s Global Powerhouses (2009) and Thinking Smart (2018). He has also co-authored several titles, including Private Label Strategy (2007), Value Merchants (2007), India Inside (2012) and the popular Brand Breakout (2013).
His work has been featured in the Harvard Business Review and Google Scholar with more than 19,000 citations.
In 2021 the American Marketing Association awarded Nirmalya the Mahajan Award for lifetime contributions to marketing strategy research. He has appeared on the Thinkers50 list thrice, holds the 2011 Global Village award and was inducted into the Thinkers50 hall of fame in 2017 for lifetime services to organisational thought governance. Nirmalya has also received numerous other accolades, including ranking several times on the Case Centre list of best-selling case authors, receiving the Light of India award, and being recognised by LinkedIn All-Star and Spotlight LinkedIn.
Nirmalya holds a PhD in Marketing from Northwestern University and an MBA from the University of Illinois. This complements his Master of Commerce from Shivaji University and Bachelor of Commerce from Calcutta University.
