Nigel Sheinwald's Biography

Sir Nigel Sheinwald GCMG is one of the UK’s most respected diplomats. He was British Ambassador to the United States from 2007 to 2012, leading the Embassy in Washington DC and nine Consulates-General around the US. He had an earlier posting to Washington from 1983 to 1987 as First Secretary (Political).

Before becoming Ambassador in Washington, Nigel served at No 10 Downing Street as Foreign Policy and Defence Adviser to the Prime Minister and Head of the Cabinet Office’s Defence and Overseas Secretariat from 2003 to 2007.

Nigel was the UK Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the European Union in Brussels from 2000 to 2003. Before that he was Europe Director in the Foreign Office. He has also served in Moscow and as Foreign Office Press Secretary.

Nigel retired from the Diplomatic Service in March 2012 and is currently a non-executive director at Shell, a senior adviser to the Brunswick Group and Universal Music Group, and Visiting Professor in the Department of War Studies at King’s College, London.
