Mark Updegrove's Biography

Mark Updegrove is a presidential historian, journalist, and author. He currently serves as president and CEO of the LBJ Foundation and is the presidential historian for ABC News, where he is a regular contributor to Good Morning America and ABC News. and a consultant for CNN.

From 2009 to 2017, he served as the director of the LBJ Presidential Library where, in 2014, he hosted the Civil Rights Summit, which included President and Mrs. Obama and former presidents George W. Bush, Clinton, George H.W. Bush, and Carter. Formerly, he served as publisher of Newsweek and president of Time Canada, Time magazine’s Canadian edition. He has conducted exclusive interviews with six U.S. presidents.

Updegrove has appeared on all the major news outlets, and has written for the New York Times, Time, Politico, The Daily Beast, The Hill, and National Geographic and was a contributing editor to Parade. His books have been excerpted in Politico, American Heritage, Texas Monthly, Parade, and on ABC.com.

Updegrove is married to Amy Banner Updegrove, the former publisher of Texas Monthly and president of Los Angeles Magazine. They have four children and live in Austin, Texas.
